Liverpool transfer blunder could now become real issue after Giovanni Leoni injury news

Alexander Isak scored his first Liverpool goal in a 2-1 win over Southampton in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

The Reds won yet another game late on with Hugo Ekitike scoring the winner and receiving a second yellow card for taking his top off.

Federico Chiesa could be set for more game time this season after another impressive performance, registering two assists against the Saints.

Liverpool were however dealt a huge blow when Giovanni Leoni came off injured, as it was later revealed that the defender could face an 18-month wait to return to pre-injury fitness levels.

Liverpool and Arne Slot may come to rue not signing Marc Guehi

Liverpool made a statement in signing Isak, in what was thought to be the most important signing of the summer for the Reds.

Now, with Leoni‘s injury, Liverpool only have Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez as their only three fit senior centre-backs.

Liverpool’s move for Marc Guehi fell through in the summer, and as the weeks go on, it’s proving more and more of a missed opportunity.

Guehi has only stepped up a level for Crystal Palace and looks like one of the best defenders in the league. The Reds simply have to go back in for the England international in the January transfer window.

Liverpool are now one van Dijk injury away from a potential collapse.

Liverpool fans need to pray Virgil van Dijk stays fit

Liverpool still sit pretty at the top of the Premier League as everything seems to be almost perfect at Anfield right now.

Slot won’t show it, but he will now be praying van Dijk stays fit, as the Liverpool captain is integral to any success that the Reds are to achieve this year.

Slot’s system encourages the fullbacks to bomb forward, as already seen with new signings Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, often leaving a lot of responsibility on van Dijk.

Van Dijk’s defensive partner, Konate, has shown shaky moments in games so far this season, with lapses of concentration being his biggest downfall.

A centre-back pairing of Gomez and Konate could be an eventuality that Liverpool fans won’t want to come true.
