How Rio Ngumoha compares to Premier League’s youngest-ever goalscorers – featuring Wayne Rooney and Arsenal legend
Rio Ngumoha is one of the most exciting young talents in English football, and he is shining for Liverpool.
Ngumoha has now put pen to paper on a first professional contract at Liverpool, with the 17-year-old already a key member of Arne Slot’s squad.
The winger became one of the youngest goalscorers in Premier League history when he netted the winner in Liverpool’s dramatic victory over Newcastle.
It was a history-making goal, as Ngumoha became Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer, and he is among some huge names as one of the youngest scorers in Premier League history.

Youngest-ever scorers in Premier League history
Ngumoha’s name is now in the history books alongside some legendary players in English football, but he was not the youngest-ever scorer in the Premier League.
That accolade goes to James Vaughan, who scored on his debut for Everton in March 2005 at the age of 16 years, eight months and 27 days.
Up next is Liverpool hero James Milner, who netted for Leeds against Sunderland in December 2002, at the age of 16 years, 11 months and 22 days.
- Milner is still playing in the Premier League at the age of 39, with Brighton and Hove Albion.
- The midfielder made 332 appearances for Liverpool and won every trophy under Jurgen Klopp, as a club icon.
Player | Age at time of goal |
James Vaughan | 16 years, 8 months, 27 days |
James Milner | 16 years, 11 months, 22 days |
Wayne Rooney | 16 years, 11 months, 25 days |
Rio Ngumoha | 16 years, 11 months, 27 days |
Cesc Fabregas | 17 years, 3 months, 21 days |
Everton and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney became one of the Premier League’s best-ever players, and was a thorn in Liverpool’s side from day one, with his debut goal coming against Arsenal when he was 16 years, 11 months and 25 days old.
Ngumoha is next up as the fourth-youngest player on the list, with his goal against Newcastle coming when he was two days older than Rooney, at 16 years, 11 months and 27 days old.
Just behind him is World Cup-winning midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who netted for Arsenal at 17 years, three months and 21 days old, before going on to win the Premier League twice with Chelsea.
Rio Ngumoha’s new contract can help him become Liverpool star
Ngumoha’s contract will run for the next three years, but he will be able to extend this even further once he turns 18.
With Luis Diaz departing in the summer, it is clear that Liverpool believes Ngumoha is ready to step up as his replacement, and he has already featured regularly this season.
Right now, Cody Gakpo is the first-choice left winger, but now that Ngumoha has committed his future to Liverpool, in the next few years he could replace the Dutchman as a key figure on the left wing.
