Tim Sherwood wowed by what Giorgi Mamardashvili did on Liverpool debut vs Southampton
Giorgi Mamardashvili made his debut for Liverpool on Tuesday as the Reds beat Southampton 2-1 in the Carabao Cup.
After a deal was agreed in 2024, Mamardashvili joined Liverpool in the summer, the goalkeeper having stayed at Valencia for an extra year on loan.
The Georgia international’s arrival opened the door for Brentford to sign Caoimhin Kelleher, with the Irishman keen for consistent first-team football.
Mamardashvili’s decision to join Liverpool was questioned, with the presence of Alisson meaning the 24-year-old is unlikely to feature in many games this season.
But others have disagreed, with Ian Darke exclusively telling Liverpool News that Mamardashvili will star for Liverpool this season.

Giorgi Mamardashvili wows on Liverpool debut
Alexander Isak started against Southampton on Tuesday, and the striker finished well to score Liverpool’s opener, as well as his first goal for the Reds.
But just moments earlier, the visitors should have been in front. Adam Armstrong was sent through on goal and hit the bar with his chipped effort, before Leo Scienza somehow headed wide with the goal gaping.
It was a surprisingly strong performance from Will Still’s side, who scored the equaliser through Shea Charles, before Hugo Ekitike’s goal won it for Slot’s side.

One early moment saw the 24-year-old drawn into action, with Tim Sherwood impressed by the goalkeeper’s save.
“Armstrong’s had a shot there, Mamardashvili, the goalkeeper, he’s made a decent save,” the former Tottenham manager told Sky Sports.
“I mean, I expect him to save it. Manning goes down the left hand side, cuts it back to Armstrong and he hits it. It’s a good height for him, he sticks his arm up and pushes it to safety.”

Giorgi Mamardashvili will have to take his chances
Such is the reliability Alisson has provided for Liverpool since his arrival, the Brazilian’s position is unlikely to be at risk.
But the chances will come for the Georgian, and he will have to take them when they do.
As shown below in stats by Sofascore, he did have a good game against Southampton despite conceding, making three saves in total.

The latter games of the Champions League group stage, as well as the cups, provide certain opportunities for the goalkeeper, but Alisson’s injury record is a point of consideration, too.
The 32-year-old missed 10 Premier League games last season, allowing for the chance that ultimately earned Kelleher his move to Brentford.
