Liverpool fans all say same thing after ‘ridiculous’ Virgil van Dijk announcement
Liverpool fans have voiced their outrage after an announcement about Virgil van Dijk that has been described as “ridiculous”.
Van Dijk is still setting individual records for Liverpool this season, as the defender gets towards a decade at the highest level in the Premier League.
The Dutchman is now 34, but looks just as dominant as the day he signed for the Reds, which will be eight years ago in January.
Van Dijk scored a late winner as Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 to kick off their Champions League campaign on Wednesday, and he was just as dominant against Everton on Saturday.

Liverpool fans fume as Virgil van Dijk Ballon d’Or ranking announced
Mohamed Salah is in contention for the Ballon d’Or, with the winner set to be announced later on Monday.
Several Liverpool players were among the nominees, including Van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister, whilst Alisson is nominated for the Yashin trophy.
The Ballon d’Or is judged by football journalists, with each of the top 100 FIFA-ranked nations represented by one journalist, who awards points for their top 10 players.
Fans were shocked when it was announced that Van Dijk had finished 28th in the race for the prestigious award, with one fan writing: “Ridiculous. Don’t tell me Van Dijk isn’t in the top five.”
Another questioned, “Is this a joke?”, and many said the defender had been “robbed.”
A Liverpool fan boldly claimed, in response to the announcement, that Van Dijk “had a better season then every defender ever”.

Virgil van Dijk deserved a higher ranking
Despite the massive pedigree that the Ballon d’Or carries, the journalists involved have been accused of harbouring huge bias in their votes, often looking at trophies before performance.
And Van Dijk’s low ranking will not have done anything to dispel those accusations, with the defender undoubtedly enjoying a stunning season for Liverpool.
The 34-year-old appeared in all but one of the Reds’ Premier League-winning campaign, maintaining consistent excellence throughout.
Virgil van Dijk | Premier League 2024/25 |
Appearances | 37 |
Average rating | 7.28 |
Clean sheets | 14 |
Clearances per game | 5.1 |
Errors leading to goals | 1 |
The defender’s bid for the Ballon d’Or falls down when it comes to Liverpool’s Champions League campaign, but a higher ranking was surely warranted.
