Wayne Rooney staggered by ‘unbelievable’ footage of one Liverpool ace on Match of the Day vs Everton
Liverpool continued their brilliant winning run with a hard-fought win over Everton at Anfield.
Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Everton sees them extend their lead at the top of the table to five points.
Two goals in the first 30mins saw Arne Slot’s side take control of the match, yet Everton’s spirited second-half display ensured that Liverpool were in for a nervy finish.
Wayne Rooney highlighted one Liverpool star who was excellent during the game, with this result meaning that Liverpool have won six games from six in all competitions this season.

Ryan Gravenberch dominated the Merseyside Derby
Liverpool’s first-half double was enough to see off David Moyes’ side, with Gravenberch stealing the show.
- 10th minute – Gravenberch scores brilliant half-volley past Jordan Pickford
- 29th minute – Gravenberch plays through Hugo Ekitike, who squeezes his shot through Pickford’s legs
- 58th minute – Idrissa Gana Gueye sweeps home a brilliant Everton move to make it 2-1
Speaking during Match of the Day on 20 September, Rooney was full of praise for Gravenberch’s brilliant goal.
He said: “Michael Keane gets sucked across, and the minute that happens, James Tarkowski should come across to cover Gravenberch, and then it’s too late.
“Gravenberch carries on his run, it’s a wonderful ball from Mohammed Salah, and an unbelievable finish from Gravenberch.
The 23-year-old is one of the best midfielders in the world, having joined Liverpool in 2023 from Bayern Munich.
He won the 2024/25 Hublot Young Player of the Season, and his performance against Everton shows he still has room to grow.
Rio Ferdinand also praised Gravenberch’s performance, as the midfielder has been adding attacking returns to his game.
Last season, he failed to score in 49 appearances as he settled into his defensive role in the side, whilst two fantastic strikes this season have shown how quickly he can develop.

Hugo Ekitike continues to shine for Liverpool
Alexander Isak started against Atletico Madrid in midweek, yet Ekitike is making a brilliant claim to start all the league matches under Slot.
His well-taken goal yesterday brings his tally up to four this season, with his three Premier League goals only bettered by Erling Haaland.
Ekitike has shown distinctive qualities in each of his goals this season, whether that be composure or power, and his red-hot form means that Slot can’t justifiably bench him for the next Premier League match away to Crystal Palace.
It’s up to Isak to prove why he can better Ekitike’s current returns, yet that will be a tough task for Liverpool’s record signing.
