Arsenal fans furious at what Florian Wirtz did in Liverpool win vs Everton

Liverpool secured a crucial victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby, but the game was not without controversy.

Goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike gave Liverpool the lead before Idrissa Gana Gueye pulled one back, but the Reds held on to secure all three points.

There were some complaints from the Everton players towards referee Darren England, with several yellow cards dished out to both sides throughout the game.

Florian Wirtz started on the Liverpool bench and came on in the second half of the derby, but rival fans, and Arsenal supporters in particular, are now fuming at one incident involving the German.

Florian Wirtz avoids second booking in Everton cameo

Wirtz endured a difficult game as he came on for the last half an hour, as he continues to adapt to life in the Premier League.

The Germany star was handed a yellow card in the 82nd minute, after bringing down Iliman Ndiaye in a cynical foul.

However, after the whistle was blown for the foul, Wirtz kicked the ball, and many Arsenal fans are now furious that this was not a second yellow, as they suffered on several occasions last season.

Arsenal fans took to X in their numbers to complain about the decision, after Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard were sent off for this offence last season.

In Wirtz’s defence, though, he kicks the ball to Ndiaye, rather than out of play, in different circumstances to Trossard’s red card against Man City a year ago.

Florian Wirtz continues to struggle

Whether or not he was deserving of a second yellow card, Wirtz will be disappointed at his lack of impact on the game, despite the result going Liverpool’s way.

Wirtz has struggled in his time at Anfield so far, although Wirtz did deliver a stronger performance against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Wirtz failed to win any of his five attempted duels against Everton, and he may find that he struggles to break back into the starting lineup, if he continues to falter while Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister impress in the midfield.
