Premier League clubs face ‘sobering moment’ after what Liverpool have gone and done

Liverpool spent a vast amount of money in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool brought Alexander Isak in on deadline day, which took their spending to nearly £450million, which is a record window for a Premier League club.

The Reds also added the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong to Arne Slot‘s squad as they look to retain their Premier League title and go further in the Champions League.

However, some observers have criticised the wild spending spree that Fenway Sports Group have overseen at Liverpool.

Liverpool News presents the exclusive opinion of finance expert Dan Plumley.

Liverpool cannot be criticised for spending spree

Liverpool may have spent a huge amount, but that is a result of a lack of spending in recent years, and sales worth approximately £194m.

Plumley believes that it gives the Reds the edge and will be a brutal reality for the rest of the division.

Speaking exclusively to Liverpool News, he said: “It is probably a quite sobering moment for other clubs lower down in that league, we are coming off the back of a record transfer window for Premier League clubs, spending over £3billion.

“Liverpool have spent nearly half a billion of that themselves, and I know fees are not paid all upfront, some of them are paid in instalments and Liverpool are good for it.

“But it does show the financial power of the biggest clubs in the league, and as you say, that is linked to revenue generation, success on the pitch, commercial expansion and the expansion of Anfield.”

Plumley added: “So all those things, gives them another edge over some of their rivals, but it does also show, again, we perhaps expected it because they did not spend hardly anything last year, so they have a couple of seasons where they have gone nowhere near those levels but if they do want to, they can do it, we have seen that this summer.

“Also, one thing we should add on, is that they have managed to recoup a decent amount for some players, big money for Diaz, decent money for Nunez, so it is not just spend, spend, spend, for me, it is an example of how far perhaps two or three, maybe four of these clubs are in the Premier League financially away from the rest.

“Because the mid-table clubs and the ones in the lower positions can’t spend half a billion in one window, it is just never going to happen.”

Liverpool in pole position for Premier League title

As Plumley claims, the Reds have a major advantage over their fellow top-flight clubs.

There should be no excuse to not win the title after the mammoth spending, but it was necessary, as the squad needed a rebuild.

It has surely set Slot’s side up for the foreseeable future, which is bad news for the rest of the division.
