‘Stop it’ – Paul Merson left red-faced as Arsenal comment called out live from Anfield

Liverpool are set to battle it out with Arsenal yet again for the Premier League title.

Liverpool are the only side with a perfect record in the Premier League after Mohamed Salah’s last-minute penalty sealed a 1-0 victory at Burnley.

Arsenal are just behind on nine points after defeating Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Saturday, as they look to challenge the Reds for the title again.

Paul Merson appeared on Sky Sports on Tuesday to discuss the title race between the two sides, and an odd comment has been called out.

Vinny O’Connor calls out Paul Merson over Arsenal comment

Merson talked up Arsenal’s title hopes this season, diminishing Liverpool’s start by stating that the Reds are not playing well.

Liverpool have struggled performance-wise so far this season, with Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez yet to settle into Arne Slot‘s side, in particular.

However, these remarks were rebuked by Sky Sports correspondent Vinny O’Connor, who brought up Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal before the international break.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s brilliant free-kick saw Liverpool steal a march over Arsenal in the title race, with Mikel Arteta’s side looking extremely cautious throughout.

Speaking live from Anfield, O’Connor said: “Liverpool fans may want to remind Paul Merson that Arsenal didn’t exactly come to Anfield and make a statement when Liverpool were not at their best.”

Merson, left with egg on his face, replied: “Stop it. Stop it, Vinny.”

Arne Slot will be happy with people writing Liverpool off

The Reds won the Premier League at a canter last season, despite many fans and pundits immediately writing them off due to Jurgen Klopp’s departure the previous season.

Slot proved the country wrong, but is still facing questions over his side’s performances this season, despite taking maximum points so far.

However, the Dutchman will be relishing the fact that people don’t believe he can repeat the trick so far, and comments like that from Merson will only fuel his ambition to win back-to-back titles.

No matter what people say, Liverpool are clear favourites to win the Premier League again, and Slot knows his side are more than capable of doing just that.
