Supercomputer predicts the outcome of Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid in Champions League

Liverpool begin their Champions League adventure with a home game against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening.

Mohamed Salah’s 95th-minute penalty gave Liverpool a 1-0 victory at Burnley to continue their perfect start to the season on Sunday.

Cracks have appeared in Arne Slot‘s side, however, with Milos Kerkez being the latest to struggle after being subbed off in the first half at Turf Moor.

Nonetheless, the Reds are still top, and will now look to conquer Europe with new signing Alexander Isak set to play some part in the Anfield clash against Atletico.

Liverpool are heavy favourites to beat Atletico Madrid

Liverpool are favourites to win the Champions League this season, with their heavy spending reflected in the 20.4 per cent chance of triumph given by Opta.

Thus, it is no surprise that Opta’s supercomputer has Liverpool as heavy favourites to get off to a winning start at Anfield, given a 56.9 per cent chance of picking up all three points.

Liverpool have been handed a kind draw in the Champions League

Atletico have been handed just a 21.4 per cent chance of emerging victorious at Anfield, while a draw is predicted at 21.7 per cent.

The Reds ran out victorious in the last campaign these two sides met in 2021, winning 3-2 in the Spanish capital before registering a comfortable 2-0 win at Anfield in the 2021/22 group stage.

Liverpool can’t have the same issues they had against Burnley

The Reds struggled mightily against Burnley at Turf Moor due to the Clarets’ ultra-defensive style, which Slot’s men couldn’t break down.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, Atletico also play very defensive football under Diego Simeone, and again will need to find a way to break them down.

They have had problems in the past against the Spanish giants, most notably being knocked out of the Champions League as the defending Champions in 2020, after losing 3-2 in extra time despite registering 34 shots.

However, Simeone’s side are not the force they once were, and if the Reds are serious about claiming a seventh European crown this season, then they need to defeat teams like Atletico.
