Mohamed Salah’s late goal created Premier League history for Liverpool against Burnley

Liverpool set a new Premier League record with their late winner against Burnley on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah had scored just once in 10 games against Burnley, but the Egyptian was on hand to score from the spot after Hannibal Mejbri had blocked Jeremie Frimpong’s cross with his arm.

Liverpool had struggled to find the net in open play, with several key chances going begging.

Arne Slot revealed that Alexander Isak will make his Liverpool debut against Aletico Madrid next week, but the striker would have enjoyed some of the chances that his teammates squandered.

Milos Kerkez was substituted before half-time against Burnley after receiving a yellow card for simulation, in what was the worst moment of the day for the Reds.

Liverpool set Premier League record after Burnley winner

Dominik Szoboszlai was selected to start at right-back again for Liverpool, and the Hungary international was among those to go closest for the Reds before the winner.

Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz also enjoyed good chances, with the latter putting on his best performance since completing his £116million move from Bayer Leverkusen.

But it was ultimately a moment of madness from Mejbri which gave Liverpool the chance to net a winner.

The midfielder inexplicably turned his back and raised his arm as Frimpong crossed, with Michael Oliver facing no other decision than to point to the spot.

And once there, Salah made no mistake, smashing past Martin Dubravka to send the away end into raptures.

Squawka revealed in a social media post on Sunday that Liverpool are the first side in Premier League history to win four consecutive games courtesy of winning goals scored in the final 10 minutes or later.

The post was accompanied by the phrase “Slot time”, referring to the infamous “Fergie time” which saw Manchester United score countless winners in the final moments at Old Trafford.

Liverpool winners – Sign of champions or sign of trouble

It was an 88th-minute Federico Chiesa winner against Bournemouth, the 100th-minute for Rio Ngumoha against Newcastle United, the 83rd-minute for Szoboszlai against Arsenal, and the 95th-minute for Salah against Burnley.

The phrase ‘sign of champions’ is banded around a lot, and Liverpool fans will be happy to accept that as an explanation for their late exploits.

But Slot will likely have a slightly different perspective. This early in the season, the Dutchman would hope to see his team comfortably ahead before the final moments, and late winners certainly cannot be relied on forever.
