Arne Slot shares ‘ridiculous’ Marc Guehi verdict that will excite Liverpool fans ahead of January

Liverpool’s move for Marc Guehi collapsed at the last second on transfer deadline day, but he could still move to Anfield.

Guehi has shone as Crystal Palace’s captain, winning the FA Cup and Community Shield as a key part of their back line.

Liverpool want extra quality and depth at centre-back, and Guehi could be the perfect long-term solution in the position.

Arne Slot has now addressed the situation surrounding Liverpool’s failed transfer for Guehi, but has now hinted at a very exciting development.

Arne Slot hints at future Marc Guehi move

The centre-back has one year left on his contract at Crystal Palace, and it was recently reported that Liverpool will only consider signing Guehi for free next summer.

However, speaking in his press conference ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Burnley, Slot refused to rule out a January move for Guehi, and addressed the transfer saga that ensued on deadline day.

I think it would be ridiculous if I will deny we were close, it was so out in the open, these things happen in football,” he stated.

“It’s happened to our players before, it can happen. We would like to sign him of course because we were in for him.

Liverpool’s depth at centre-back.

“If we feel we can strengthen, then we try to. We played Ibou [Konate] and Virgil [Van Dijk] were outstanding against Arsenal and Gomez as well and we signed Leoni, who had a call-up, and we have Wataru and Ryan as well, so it’s not that we don’t have the players.

“It’s a pity for the player but he is at a good club. Let’s see what the future brings for us. January or summer? I don’t tell you but I am thinking of Burnley.”

Liverpool may need Marc Guehi in January

A January move for Guehi could help Liverpool win the Premier League title, and it must still be under consideration despite reports to the contrary.

Ibrahima Konate’s injury record and the lack of experienced depth mean that Liverpool are constantly close to a potential crisis, with a lot of games to balance between now and January.

While Virgil Van Dijk and Konate could hold out playing regularly until January, they may not last a full campaign playing in four different competitions, and Guehi joining mid-season would be a huge boost.

A move for the defender feels inevitable whether in January or next summer, and it is perhaps worth paying a premium to bring him in as soon as possible.
