Jamie Carragher joins Ryan Giggs in being awarded unique accolade after what he did at Liverpool

Jamie Carragher is undoubtedly one of Liverpool’s greatest modern legends, and the former defender has now received a new accolade.

Carragher spent his entire career at Anfield and is the second-highest appearance maker in the history of Liverpool.

Despite not winning the Premier League, the Sky Sports pundit is one of the most recognisable players in its history, and he did win the Champions League and several domestic cups during his long spell at the club.

The defender often came up against Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs, and he has now joined the Welshman in receiving a remarkable award as one of Liverpool’s biggest legends.

Athletic Club hand award to Jamie Carragher

La Liga giants Athletic Club have now handed an award to Liverpool legend Carragher, to signify the fact that he was a one-club man, a rare commodity in the modern game.

This award from the Basque side has come as Carragher, as a one-club man, “demonstrated values which reflect Athletic Club’s own identity as a football club,” and he will travel to San Mames in the coming weeks, where he will be presented with the award.

Athletic Club are insistent on the value of loyalty, as one of the most unique clubs in the world, where every player they develop or sign has to be of Basque origin.

They believe that players like Carragher showed their clubs true commitment by never leaving, and that he followed the values of the ‘principle of origin’ by showing unwavering loyalty to Liverpool.

Jamie Carragher delighted with Athletic Club award

Carragher will collect his award at half-time in Athletic Club’s clash with Girona on September 23, and will be presented on the pitch in front of their home support.

Speaking to Liverpool club media, Carragher admitted that he was honoured to receive the award from Athletic Club.

“It was an honour when Athletic Club got in touch. Athletic are respected everywhere in the world of football. They’re a truly unique club,” Carragher stated.

“I’m very honoured to receive this award and to know my name will always remain alongside some great footballers like [previous winners] Paolo Maldini and Carles Puyol.

“As soon as I started playing for Liverpool, I knew I wanted to be a one-club man. I like the idea that when people ask, ‘Who did you play for?’, you respond ‘Liverpool’ and nothing else. I was a supporter on the pitch.”

This is not the first development of a relationship between the Reds and clubs in La Liga, as Liverpool’s potential purchase of Getafe could see them build up their status in Spain even further.
