Michael Owen to battle Liverpool legend for place in Premier League Hall of Fame

Liverpool have had a lot of Premier League icons grace the pitch at Anfield, but some are more fondly remembered than others.

Michael Owen was once the best teenager in world football at Liverpool, and even won a Ballon d’Or during his time at Anfield.

However, a later career move to Manchester United completely ruined Owen’s legacy at Liverpool, but despite this, he enjoyed a very impressive career in England overall.

Owen has now been nominated for a spot in the Premier League Hall of Fame, but he will have to battle a true Liverpool legend to receive the award.

Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen nominated for PL Hall of Fame

Owen could have become Liverpool’s greatest-ever Premier League goalscorer, but his premature departure meant that he did not reach Robbie Fowler’s total.

While both had similar scoring records, the pair will now go head-to-head for a spot in the Premier League Hall of Fame.

The Premier League have now announced that 15 nominees have been shortlisted for two places in the Hall of Fame, which honours the greatest players to have featured in the league.

Owen and Fowler are among 15 nominees for two places, and will face stiff competition from the likes of Gary Neville, Eden Hazard and Teddy Sheringham.

Liverpool players in the Hall of Fame

The Premier League Hall of Fame was created in 2021, with the aim of celebrating the best and most iconic players to have graced the English top flight since 1992.

Liverpool have just one player in there so far, with legendary captain Steven Gerrard one of the first nominees.

One of Owen or Fowler could be next, but in the future, Liverpool can expect to have several more inductees.

Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are almost certain to be nominated once they retire, and the likes of Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson and Roberto Firmino could also be in with a shout given their remarkable performance levels over the years.
