Everton Women icon blown away at Marie Hobinger exploits for Liverpool in derby

Marie Hobinger was at the heart of Liverpool Women’s play against Everton.

Gareth Taylor was taking charge of Liverpool for the first time in the Women’s Super League opener against the Goodison Park outfit on Sunday, which was played at Anfield.

Liverpool are predicted to finish fifth in the WSL after a dismal campaign last time out, which resulted in Matt Beard being sacked.

The former Manchester City boss made several additions on deadline day, as Liverpool signed the likes of Beata Olsson, Alejandre Bernabe, Emilia Szymczak and Risa Shimizu.

Liverpool start perfectly under Gareth Taylor

Grace Fisk was appointed as Liverpool Women’s captain ahead of the campaign, but it was Marie Hobinger who was their star woman against the Blues.

The Austrian played a key role in Cornelia Kapocs’ stunning opening goal, and it left former Everton Women star Toni Duggan in awe.

Speaking on Sky Sports on 7 September (12:14 pm), she said: “What a great goal that is, I think, also at the start of the move, you saw Marie Hobinger, she makes the move.

“She makes the play in behind, there is no surprise there because she was involved in so much of Liverpool’s creativity last year.”

Marie Hobinger will be Gareth Taylor’s creative hub for Liverpool

Hobinger was one of the best players in the WSL last season, creating 47 chances for the Reds despite their struggles.

Only Arsenal’s Katie McCabe bested the 24-year-old in that metric, and she is expected to be the heartbeat of Taylor’s side this season.

Hobinger registered three goals and two assists in the league last season, and should have a bigger impact under the new boss, as her importance to the team is clear for all to see.

Unfortunately for the Reds and their Austrian star, Brian Sorensen’s side got back into the contest through a wonderful goal of their own.

New addition Ornella Vignola curled a beautiful effort into the net after breaking from a Reds corner, and it was all square at half-time.

Taylor’s side were dominant in the first half of the contest, but they did not make it pay, and Katja Snoeijis put the visitors ahead just before the break.

Taylor needs Hobinger to work her magic once again in the second-half, if his team are to get the win that they deserve.
