When Giovanni Leoni will make his Liverpool debut as new claim made

Liverpool signing Giovanni Leoni is yet to make his debut.

Leoni was included on the bench for Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Newcastle, in which Rio Ngumoha scored a last-gasp winner after his £26million move from Parma.

He was then not in the squad as Liverpool secured a 1-0 win over Arsenal in what could be a crucial Premier League title decider come the end of the season.

Leoni will surely get a chance soon, as he is very highly rated, with Italian legend Andrea Pirlo amongst the new Liverpool man’s admirers.

Giovanni Leoni could start for Liverpool soon

Liverpool’s failure to sign Marc Guehi could give Leoni a chance to make an impression, sooner rather than later.

Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele believes that the Italian will make his debut after the Reds return from the international break.

In a column on 4 September, he said: “I think the Carabao Cup match against Southampton in three weeks is probably the best bet.”

Liverpool fans will be keen to see Giovanni Leoni in action

Not many Liverpool supporters will have heard of Leoni before the Reds’ interest became clear.

However, they will be desperate to see the 18-year-old take to the pitch and show them what he can do.

If his Anfield debut is the Carabao Cup clash with the Saints, it will be the perfect contest to give Leoni an opportunity in.

The last thing that Arne Slot wants to do is shatter his confidence by throwing him into the deep end during a league or Champions League match, when he may not be ready.

Obviously, the Dutchman will get glimpses of what level he is at in training, but on the pitch is when his performance really matters.

The fact that he has stuck around and not been sent out on loan is a positive indication of how Slot feels about the Italian, who has been called up for the senior national team for the first time, for the World Cup qualifiers with Estonia and Israel.
