Forget Cody Gakpo, Alan Shearer is blown away by ‘incredible’ Liverpool player

Liverpool have enjoyed a strong start to the season, winning all three of their opening Premier League matches.

Wins against Bournemouth and Newcastle United kicked off the season, before Liverpool beat title rivals Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday.

The strong form comes off the back of a sensational transfer window that saw the Reds break their own and the Premier League’s transfer record twice.

Liverpool agreed a £125million fee to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle on transfer deadline day, marking the end of a summer-long saga.

But Arne Slot was dealt a rare blow, when Liverpool’s move for Marc Guehi fell apart in the final hours of the window.

Alan Shearer hails ‘brilliant’ Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai’s match-winning free kick against Arsenal was described as “Cristiano Ronaldo-like” by Gary Neville.

It was a moment of pure brilliance to decide a game that had lacked exactly that, with both teams keeping tight at the back.

Liverpool won a free kick in the 83rd minute, and Szoboszlai stepped up, striking a knuckleball-style shot that swerved in the air before soaring past the reach of David Raya and deflecting in off the post.

Equally as impressive was the Hungary international’s defensive performance, despite being selected to play out of position at right-back for the second game running.

Faced up against the rapid Gabriel Martinelli, the 24-year-old made it look easy, dominating every exchange with the Brazilian.

Speaking on The Rest is Football, Alan Shearer picked out Szoboszlai’s performance and waxed lyrical about the midfielder’s performance.

“And then we’re looking to see who’s going to fill in it right back, Szoboszlai has been absolutely fantastic,” the Premier League record scorer said.

“He was brilliant at Newcastle when he played right back and he was brilliant again today. And of course he scores that incredible, incredible goal.

“So yeah, I think better things to come in terms of performance from Liverpool, but results-wise, three out of three, can’t argue without hitting top-node.”

Dominik Szoboszlai’s form will be hard to ignore

Jeremie Frimpong is set to return following the September international break, but the Dutchman may have a hard time getting back into the team.

Such is the impressiveness of Szoboszlai’s form, the Hungarian may well keep his position in Slot’s defence, with Conor Bradley also set to stay on the sidelines.

The 24-year-old offers something different to Frimpong, naturally drifting into midfield instead of overlapping – much like the departed Trent Alexander-Arnold.
