Marc Guehi to Liverpool ‘looking unlikely’ as Arne Slot dealt deadline day blow

Liverpool have had an incredible summer window, but the final piece of the puzzle may not arrive before the transfer deadline.

A record deal for Newcastle star Alexander Isak has now been agreed on deadline day, and he will follow Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike into Anfield as major signings.

Liverpool have strengthened their attack well, but after conceding four goals in their first two games, another defender was targeted.

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is of significant interest, but Arne Slot may not sign the 25-year-old today after a new development.

Marc Guehi to Liverpool now unlikely

Guehi is a crucial player for Crystal Palace, who have already lost Eberechi Eze to Arsenal this summer, and they do not want to let him leave.

The centre-back has been a model professional throughout the transfer saga, and Guehi scored in Crystal Palace’s 3-0 win away at Aston Villa shortly after Liverpool’s victory over Arsenal.

Liverpool recently made a bid of around £35 million for Guehi, but this may now be rejected.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has reported that the deal has now become “difficult” after Palace manager Oliver Glasner expressed a strong desire to keep him this summer.

Ibrahima Konate came off injured against Arsenal, and this may mean that Guehi is even more necessary, but as it stands, the deal may no longer happen now.

Liverpool could still sign Marc Guehi next year

Guehi is in the final year of his contract, and he could end up joining Liverpool for free next year if he does not move now.

Palace’s failure to find a replacement may mean they dig their heels in and take the financial hit of losing him for free rather than going against Glasner’s wishes.

Konate is also in the final year of his deal with an uncertain future, and if he does depart next summer, Guehi could still end up being his replacement.

Liverpool did sign Giovanni Leoni from Parma as a centre-back, but may have left themselves somewhat short at the back if the Guehi deal collapses.
