Liverpool’s stance on selling Joe Gomez now revealed amid AC Milan interest

Liverpool star Joe Gomez has been heavily linked with a move to AC Milan.

Liverpool are chasing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, and Fenway Sports Group could look to sell players to reimburse a potential £500million spend.

Palace do not want to sell Guehi to Liverpool, but the fact that they are bringing in defensive reinforcements on deadline day suggests that they might.

Gomez is reportedly keen on a Liverpool exit, but his potential move may be under threat after a new reveal was made.

Liverpool do not want to sanction Joe Gomez departure

Gomez could provide key depth for Arne Slot‘s side this season, and it appears that the Dutchman wants to keep him around.

Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett claimed on 1 September that the Reds feel it is too late to allow the 28-year-old to leave.

Speaking live on the platform (11:05 am), he said: “Whilst I’ve been told they were close to thrashing out terms and agreeing a deal, Liverpool then pulled the plug and said we are not allowing Joe Gomez to go unless we get somebody in.

“Actually, Arne Slot is very keen to have both in his squad, Marc Guehi and Joe Gomez, in his ranks.

“AC Milan were interested, close to a deal, I was told for Joe Gomez, but Liverpool said we don’t think that can happen in time.”

Joe Gomez needs to stay at Liverpool

It makes sense that the Premier League champions are not willing to sell Gomez at this stage.

They are lacking depth at centre-back, and there is no guarantee that Palace will allow Guehi to join the L4 outfit before the deadline.

If the happens, the Reds’ stance could change, but judging by what Dorsett has heard, that will not be the case.

Slot needs his side to have as many options as possible in each position, due to the potential for an injury crisis, so signing Guehi and keeping Gomez around is a logical conclusion.

The former England ace was fantastic when he replaced Ibrahima Konate against Arsenal, and proved that he can still operate at the top level.

Given the number of games that Slot’s side will play this season, and the fact that they will have to bed Giovanni Leoni in slowly, Gomez will likely see a decent amount of action, if he can stay fit.

That is a significant question, as he has missed a total of 276 matches for club and country since joining the Reds from Charlton Athletic in 2015.
