Liverpool’s Marc Guehi deal in late jeopardy thanks to West Ham

Liverpool’s move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is in danger of collapse in the final hours of the transfer window.

Guehi had been undergoing a medical at Liverpool, after an agreement worth around £35million was found with the South London club.

The defender has been linked to Anfield for much of the summer, with Arne Slot desperate to add defensive depth to his back line.

Liverpool have signed Giovanni Leoni from Parma, but the Italian is just 18 and not expected to take on a central role this season.

Guehi’s arrival could’ve allowed for an exit at the back, with Joe Gomez linked with a late move to Brighton.

Marc Guehi move could fail after Julio Igor update

Crystal Palace had looked to sanction the Guehi deal after sealing a move for Julio Igor, who was set to join the Eagles from Brighton.

But in the final hours of the transfer window, the deal that would seen Oliver Glasner provided with a replacement for Guehi has collapsed, with Igor now expected to join West Ham.

The Austrian was clear when he commented on the situation on Sunday following Palace’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

Glasner said: “I told the chairman we have to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season.”

The former Eintracht Frankfurt boss looked to have been denied his request, but following the collapse of the Igor deal, he could still have a say on Guehi’s future.

David Ornstein reported on Monday 1 September that the move to Liverpool is in jeopardy, with talks now taking place between Glasner and the defender to decide on an outcome.

Late blow would add sour taste to special Liverpool window

Liverpool have experienced a heavenly transfer window. The Reds have broken their transfer record twice – first to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, before a £125m fee was agreed with Newcastle United to sign Alexander Isak on deadline day.

But if the Guehi move is to fall apart, Slot’s side will still feel weak in defence, with the Dutchman having just four senior centre-backs at his disposal.

Two of which, Ibrahima Konate and Gomez, have suffered from extensive injury issues over the past few seasons.
