Joe Gomez emerges as late candidate to join surprise Premier League club, talks start but clock ticking

Joe Gomez could still leave Liverpool in the final hours of the transfer window, with Marc Guehi set to join from Crystal Palace.

It has been a busy transfer deadline day for the Reds, with decision-makers at Anfield hoping to cap off what has been a very busy summer.

Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, finally marking the end of a saga that has raged on for months.

And Guehi is now undergoing a medical to join Liverpool from Crystal Palace, after a deal worth more than £35million was agreed.

AC Milan were in talks to sign Gomez, but the Serie A side pulled out of the deal believing there would be too little time to complete the formalities.

Brighton interested in Joe Gomez

Gomez had agreed on a four-year deal at AC Milan before the Italian giants pulled out of negotiations.

If the Guehi deal does get over the line, the defender would be allowed to leave Liverpool, with Arne Slot’s options at the back significantly strengthened.

Liverpool signed Giovanni Leoni from Parma earlier in the summer, with the 18-year-old viewed as a key defender for the future.

Gomez came off the bench for the injured Ibrahima Konate against Arsenal on Sunday, and performed exceptionally well in the closing stages.

But the 28-year-old has faced several bouts of injury in recent years, having already missed the start of this season.

Liverpool could still be willing to sanction his departure, with James Pearce reporting on Monday 1 September that Brighton have shown late interest in Gomez.

Nothing has been agreed, however, and the clock is ticking on any potential deal that still could go through before the 7 pm deadline.

Joe Gomez can still have a role at Liverpool

Gomez’s performance against Arsenal proved that he still can play a part in Liverpool’s squad this season, and could still be useful.

Despite Guehi’s arrival, Slot will still have just four senior centre-backs at his disposal if the former Charlton man leaves.

Konate has faced several injuries in the past, and Leoni is still raw. Despite his own injury problems, Gomez would provide an experienced alternative with Liverpool facing participation in four competitions.
