Joe Gomez agrees four-year contract at AC Milan, Liverpool exit depends on one condition

Liverpool are attempting to rejig their options in the centre of defence on transfer deadline day.

AC Milan are interested in Joe Gomez, and are confident of completing a move for the former England international.

And Liverpool are attempting to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, with negotiations underway over a deal worth around £35million.

Ibrahima Konate was forced off injured against Arsenal on Sunday, intensifying Arne Slot’s demands for a new defender at Anfield.

Liverpool are also set to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, who will finally join the Reds after a summer-long transfer saga.

Joe Gomez move relies on Marc Guehi developments

Liverpool’s move for Guehi was described as “unlikely” as of Monday morning, but decision-makers will hope Palace’s stance shifts before the 7 pm deadline.

Eagles boss Oliver Glasner was clear about his thoughts on the move on Sunday, making it clear that he thinks the defender must stay at the club.

Guehi scored for Palace as they beat Aston Villa 3-0, and appeared to reject Dean Henderson’s calls for the defender to go over to the fans following the final whistle.

But a move could still take place on deadline day, and Gomez’s chances of moving to AC Milan will hinge on if it does.

Luca Bendoni reported on Monday 1 September that the former Charlton defender has agreed on a four-year deal at San Siro, but any move being sanctioned by Liverpool depends on the Guehi deal.

Time is rapidly running out, however, with a change in stance needed by Palace within the next few hours for Gomez’s move to realistically happen before the deadline.

Joe Gomez could provide good option for Arne Slot regardless

Gomez came on for Liverpool against Arsenal for the injured Konate and helped the Reds see out the clean sheet against the visitors.

In just 11 minutes on the pitch, the defender made seven clearances and won three aerial duels against the tall Viktor Gyokeres.

Whether a move for Guehi materialises or not, Gomez is a valuable option for Slot to keep in the squad, with the Dutchman lacking many options elsewhere.

The player’s wishes could prove key in any potential move, but should he be happy to stay, it would be wise for Liverpool to keep him at the club this summer.
