‘I’ve been told this is Liverpool and Marc Guehi current state of play’ – Sky Sports journalist

Liverpool are attempting to get a deal over the line to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day.

The Reds’ attempts to sign the England international have lasted for much of the summer, with Arne Slot hoping to bolster his backline.

But Liverpool are now confident of signing Guehi, with talks ongoing over a deal in the region of £35million.

Joe Gomez agreed personal terms with AC Milan with a potential exit lined up if the move went through, but that move now appears to be off.

Deadline day started in the best way for Reds fans, when Liverpool agreed a record-breaking deal to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.

Marc Guehi to Liverpool chances are 50/50

Guehi would be happy to stay at Palace if the move does not materialise, but the defender would also be keen to make the switch to Liverpool.

Ibrahima Konate was forced off through injury against Arsenal on Sunday, further underlining Slot’s need for a new central defender.

Liverpool signed Giovanni Leoni from Parma this summer, but the defender is just 18 and perhaps not ready for Premier League football.

Slot’s other options contain Konate and Gomez – two defenders who have suffered from frequent and significant injury issues over the past few seasons.

But a deal for Guehi is not quite guaranteed yet, with James Savundra giving an update on the situation live on Sky Sports on Monday.

“I’ve been told it’s in the balance whether or not Marc Guehi remains at Crystal Palace or goes to Liverpool,” the journalist said.

“50/50 is what I was told in the last hour or so. He continued: “There’s a player that Oliver Glasner really, really wants, he’s their top target to replace Marc Guehi, and that is Strahinja Pavlovic from AC Milan.

“Now, if they could get a deal done to sign Pavlovic today, then it seems likely that Marc Guehi would be allowed to depart.

“I don’t think Crystal Palace financially would be in a situation where they could have Pavlovic and Marc Guehi whilst allowing Guehi to leave for free next summer.”

Liverpool need to sign Marc Guehi

Much of the focus of this transfer window has been placed on Liverpool’s attack, with several new big-money arrivals joining the front line.

But the back line has been neglected somewhat, with the Reds still just two injuries from a crisis at the back.

Should Liverpool want to avoid such an event taking place this season, they must make sure Guehi is pictured at Anfield on transfer deadline day.
