‘Special’ Liverpool star is on the ‘verge’ of signing blockbuster new contract at Anfield

Liverpool have made a fast start in the Premier League, winning both of their opening matches.

Despite producing unconvincing performances against both Newcastle and Bournemouth, Liverpool sit third in the league, and are relishing the prospect of welcoming title-rivals Arsenal to Anfield.

Some of Arne Slot’s players have started the season brilliantly, whilst others have been poor in every aspect of their game.

One Liverpool player may be rewarded for his great start with a new contract that would keep him at the club for many more years.

Cody Gakpo set to stay at Liverpool beyond 2028

Reports by Eindhovens Dagblad suggest that Gakpo “is on the verge of signing a new contract” with Liverpool, with his current deal being active until 2028.

Gakpo’s £35million move from PSV Eindhoven has been a large success, having to fend off interest from Manchester United to secure the star in December 2022.

The departure of Luis Diaz has meant that Gakpo has been the unopposed starter on the left-wing, and he has started the season in brilliant fashion.

Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike have formed a great partnership, linking up effectively in both of their opening league fixtures.

Gakpo may have some unexpected competition as the season continues, following Rio Ngumoha’s last-minute winner against Newcastle.

However, his current form and progress at Liverpool has shown that he is more than worthy of a new contract, and extending his time at Liverpool.

Gakpo set for PSV reunion after Liverpool handed tough Champions League draw

Liverpool found out their Champions League opponents after Thursday’s draw, with many interesting matchups set to take place.

The schedule is yet to be confirmed so whilst Liverpool know who they’ll play, it is unclear when each of the fixtures will take place.

Gakpo will be reunited with his PSV as Liverpool host his old side at Anfield.

Having brought through their academy, Gakpo scored 55 goals in 159 appearances for the senior team, before making his move to Merseyside.

The most notable tie of the round is Liverpool hosting Real Madrid, with Trent Alexander-Arnold returning to Anfield for the first time since his transfer.

The Reds away fixtures don’t look much easier, with trips to Italy and Turkey on the horizon.

Inter Milan, last season’s finalists, will host Liverpool in what will be a fascinating tactical battle, whilst Galatasaray are always a banana skin for any side in Europe.

Their other fixtures include home matches vs Atletico Madrid and Qarabag, and away away fixtures at Eintracht Frankfurt and Marseille.
