Ex-Liverpool stars rub it in as Manchester United are stunned by Grimsby in Carabao Cup

Liverpool are set to enter the Carabao Cup next month, with the Reds aiming to lift the trophy.

Liverpool reached the final of the Carabao Cup last year, before losing to Newcastle 2-1.

Now, Arne Slot’s side have been drawn against Southampton at Anfield. However, there was one notable team missing from the draw.

Manchester United, who were in the second round due to their lack of European football, were stunned by Grimsby on penalties on Wednesday.

As a result, it has taken little time for former players and pundits alike to mock the result.

Neil Mellor and John Aldridge react to Manchester United defeat

While Liverpool are busy winning titles, Man United have been on a rapid decline in recent years.

As a result, many Liverpool fans have been quick to mock Man United throughout recent months.

After finishing 15th last season, the Red Devils are still awaiting their first win of the 2025/26 campaign, with their Carabao Cup defeat on Wednesday confounding their recent misery.

Man United found themselves 2-0 down at the break but managed to pull the game to penalties against the League Two opposition thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire.

However, the former star would go on to miss a decisive penalty in the shootout to give Ruben Amorim’s side another humiliating defeat.

As a result, many former Liverpool stars took to X on 27 August to mock the result.

Neil Mellor put “great scene,” with a clapping emoji, whereas John Aldridge simply put three laughing faces and a thumbs up.

When will the third round of the Carabao Cup take place?

While the exact date of Liverpool’s tie against Southampton hasn’t been confirmed, it will take place across the weeks of 15 and 22 September to accommodate teams also taking part in European fixtures.

Therefore, it may depend on when the Reds are set to play in the Champions League.

However, overall, Liverpool will be pleased with their draw, with Slot’s side now having a great chance of progressing in the cup.

Hopefully, this season will result in the trophy being lifted rather than enduring the heartbreak of last season all over again.
