Alan Shearer shares why Anthony Gordon cost Newcastle £10m with stupidity against Liverpool
Liverpool maintained their 100 per cent start to the Premier League season with a dramatic 3-2 win over 10-man Newcastle United on Monday.
Liverpool took the lead through Ryan Gravenberch’s clean strike and an incident-packed game took a big twist via a moment of madness from Magpies winger Anthony Gordon.
The forward lunged into the back of Virgil van DIjk, with studs scraping the back of the Dutchman’s calf, to earn a straight red card.
Hugo Ekitike swiftly made it 2-0 for the Reds before Newcastle produced a spirited fightback to draw level through Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula.
However, 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha won the game for Arne Slot’s side in the 100th-minute to settle a breathless contest.
Gordon’s actions at the end of the half clearly turned the game on its head, leaving Newcastle winless from their opening two matches.

Alan Shearer alludes to bigger problem with Gordon red card
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer suggested that Gordon’s challenge cost Newcastle both on and off the pitch.
With Alexander Isak’s future uncertain amid interest from liverpool, Newcastle have just had a £50million bid rejected for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said: “It’s just gone up another £10 million now Gordon is missing the next three games with suspension as well.
“Because of the situation with Gordon missing three games, it looks like he will have to start against Leeds, and this will be a good opportunity for him.”
Gordon’s dangerous tackle has left him suspended for fixtures against Leeds, Wolves, and Bournemouth, with the England international returning for Newcastle’s clash against Liverpool’s title rivals, Arsenal.

Anthony Gordon red card unsurprising following previous incident
Gordon has been a success at Newcastle following his £45m move from Everton.
However, this is the second time in 2025 that Gordon has received a red card, with his first dismissal coming back in March.
Gordon lashed out at Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in their FA Cup tie and got himself a straight red, meaning he was suspended for Newcastle’s EFL Cup final against Liverpool.
Despite Eddie Howe’s side going on to beat the Reds, Gordon could not be on the pitch to celebrate with his teammates as Newcastle ended their 56-year trophy drought.
As he did in March, Gordon has let his side down at a crucial time as Newcastle struggles to sign a striker continue to intensify.
