All eight Liverpool players to win the PFA Player of the Year as Mohamed Salah makes history

Mohamed Salah made Premier League history as he became the first player to win the PFA Player of the Year award three times.

On Tuesday, 19 August, Salah won the 2025 Professional Footballers’ Association award, which was voted for by his fellow Premier League players.

This comes after the Egyptian had one of the greatest seasons seen in the top flight, scoring 29 goals for his side and providing 18 assists as Liverpool lifted the title.

Salah is joined by seven other Reds players as the winner of the prestigious award.

1. Terry McDermott

In the 1979/80 season, Liverpool legend Terry McDermott became the first Reds player to win the PFA Men’s Player of the Year.

He was the eighth player to win the award after it was set up in 1973/74.

McDermott played at Anfield between 1974 and 1982 and notched 81 goals.

2. Kenny Dalglish

Kenny Dalglish won the award just three years after his Liverpool counterpart.

The Scotsman became well known for his influence on Merseyside and got the nickname ‘King Kenny’ for his skills and attributes on and off the pitch.

Dalglish scored 172 goals for the Reds, but was notably recognised for his compassion and leadership following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

3. Ian Rush

Ian Rush is Liverpool’s all-time leading top goalscorer with 346 goals in 660 games across two spells.

The striker won the trophy one year after his Scottish teammate in 1984.

‘Rushie’ won five league titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, and two European Cups for the Reds.

Rush has continued to keep in contact with Liverpool and keeps a close eye on what goes on at Anfield.

4. John Barnes

John Barnes was twice named Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year (1988, 1990) and won the PFA Player of the Year in 1988.

The former England international played for Watford from 1981-87 before moving to Liverpool and spending ten years on Merseyside before retiring.

5. Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard is a legend in Liverpool.

In the Champions League in 2005, he led Liverpool’s historic comeback from 3–0 down against AC Milan in the “Miracle of Istanbul.”

The next season, Gerrard was awarded the PFA trophy, having helped Rafa Benitez’s side win the FA Cup against West Ham on penalties.

6. Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez was a controversial figure on Merseyside.

He inexplicably faced bans for biting opposition players, but also showed plenty of class on the pitch.

Suarez scored 31 goals and assisted 12 in the 2013/14 season as Liverpool narrowly missed out on the Premier League title, but he did pick up the individual award.

7. Virgil Van Dijk

Van Dijk has been a rock at the back for Liverpool in recent seasons.

He captained Arne Slot’s side to the Premier League title last season, but burst onto the scene under Jurgen Klopp in the 2018/19 season.

The Reds missed out on the title by just one point, but Van Dijk’s role that season earned him the respect of his fellow players as he won the Player of the Year trophy.

However, nobody can match the hero that is Salah.
