Virgil van Dijk makes fresh Alexander Isak claim amid Liverpool transfer saga
Alexander Isak continues to be linked with Liverpool this summer.
The Newcastle striker’s future is still unclear after a bid from the Reds was rebuffed.
Isak is currently refusing to play for Newcastle amid Liverpool’s interest and was left out of the squad in their draw with Aston Villa.
However, with the transfer window closing soon, there isn’t a lot of time to get a deal done.

Virgil van Dijk names Alexander Isak as one of his toughest opponents
On Tuesday, the PFA awards ceremony is set to take place, celebrating all of the achievements from the 2024/25 Premier League season.
Liverpool had plenty of stars nominated for Player of the Year, with Mohamed Salah and Alexis Mac Allister among six candidates.
This is hardly surprising with Liverpool’s Salah and Mac Allister named in various Team of the Seasons.
- Isak has also been nominated for Player of the Year
- Virgil van Dijk previously won it in the 2018/19 campaign
- Mohamed Salah is looking to win the award for a second time
Ahead of the ceremony, the PFA went live on TikTok on 19 August, with presenter Cecil Jee Thomas interviewing many players, including Virgil van Dijk.
One question asked was has there had been an attacker who had caused the defender problems in recent years.
Van Dijk responded: “Halaand, Isak, Watkins, Harry Kane when speaking about the last couple of years in the Premier League, there are plenty there.
“Everyone has a different challenge against them. I respect everyone who has played in the Prem because it is the hardest league in the world.”

Alexander Isak’s record vs Liverpool
Since Isak moved to the Premier League, van Dijk has faced the Swede six times in all competitions.
While this has not resulted in many wins, the striker has got the better of Liverpool’s captain on multiple occasions.
In his six appearances against the Reds, Isak has netted four times and picked up one assist.
Alexander Isak’s record against Liverpool | |
Matches played | 6 |
Wins | 1 |
Draws | 1 |
Losses | 4 |
Goals | 4 |
Assists | 1 |
Trophies won | Carabao Cup x1 |
The costliest was no doubt Isak’s goal in Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final last season.
Therefore, if the striker were to be signed, it would no doubt prevent him from causing problems in the future.
