Liverpool must perform Premier League ‘trick’ after Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez departures

Liverpool have been hailed for the signings they have made, but they also know how to sell.

Florian Wirtz arrived at Anfield for £116million, and he is just one of several high-cost acquisitions this summer.

However, the Merseyside club have also sold well, with Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz both departing Liverpool for sizeable fees.

Although they appear to have done solid business, there is one trick they must now pull off in the Premier League.

Liverpool must meet Premier League expectations after transfer activity

Diaz produced some memorable moments for Liverpool and may be missed on Merseyside.

However, the Reds can utilise the money acquired from him and Nunez to fund further activity.

Now, football finance expert Dan Plumley – speaking exclusively to Liverpool News – has weighed in on the departed duo.

“I think both of those players, for the fees that they’ve gone for, with Diaz and Nunez, they’re both really good deals on paper for Liverpool,” he said.

“We know transfers don’t work in a money-in, money-out scenario nowadays, but if you look at the fees alone and the players that they’ve been able to shift on as well, of course, the fee that they banked for Alexander-Arnold that they got from Real Madrid.

There are loads of little things here that the outgoings alone have been very successful, and the incomings have got some real talent in that squad, and they didn’t spend anything last season, did they? And they won the Premier League.

“So all in all, if you’re looking at that, I think it’s been really good summer’s worth of business for them.

“The trick, as I say, is can you go and do it again? That’s when people will perhaps start to criticise if they don’t hit the heights of last season, but as we’re talking right now, I think for those two players in particular, that’s in terms of deals out, both really good fees and some good money recoup for Liverpool this summer.”

Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez sales can fund Alexander Isak transfer

One of the main reasons why Diaz and Nunez were both allowed to go is Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak.

Of course, Arne Slot already has Hugo Ekitike in his arsenal, but the Swede is essentially trying to push through a move to Merseyside.

Isak would likely cost Liverpool north of £120m, and considering how much has already been spent in the North West, the sales of Diaz and Nunez can fund such a move.

The Reds have raised more than £100m from the sales of Nunez and Diaz, which shows that they can sell smart.

Indeed, if that money can land Isak, the Slot would have a team of world beaters on his hands.
