‘He doesn’t have a clue’ – Alan Shearer blasts Milos Kerkez after MOTD footage in Liverpool win

Liverpool managed to get off to a winning start to their 2025/26 Premier League campaign on Friday with a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth.

Hugo Ekitike was no doubt the pick of the Liverpool team, with the striker finding the net once again.

Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah also got on the scoresheet. However, it was far from a comfortable display.

Many players were poor, with Ibrahima Konate being slammed for his performance at Anfield

Milos Kerkez also struggled, with the full-back eventually being subbed off by Arne Slot.

Shearer: Kerkez not good enough vs Bournemouth

One of the most alarming issues with Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth was their defence.

The Reds were cut open by the Cherries multiple times, especially on the counter-attack.

Kerkez seemed unable to deal with this, and lost his man multiple times.

This was highlighted by Shearer on Match of the Day on 16 August, as the former Newcastle striker analysed Antoine Semenyo’s early chance in the game.

He said: “They are never going to fail to score goals Liverpool, but at the moment, they look very vulnerable in the turnover in possession in terms of counter-attack goals.

“After 38 matches last season, they had conceded two from counter-attacks, after one game this season, they have conceded two.

“Look at that there, Kerkez hasn’t got a close where he is, they (Bournemouth) should have scored two goals and gone 2-0 up.”

How bad was Kerkez in Liverpool vs Bournemouth?

Overall, Kerkez wasn’t too bad against his former side.

As of 17 August, Fotmob gave the full-back a 6.9 rating, while not great, also isn’t awful.

The full-back had decent defensive stats and was the most accurate passer on the field who played 45 minutes or more.

While Slot will be hoping Kerkez, who cost Liverpool around £40million this summer, will improve as the season goes on, it was not an awful performance.

Hopefully, Liverpool will now produce a more convincing display when they face Newcastle next Monday and begin to pull clear at the top of the table.
