‘Oh my word!’ – Jamie Carragher says one Liverpool star was ‘absolutely shocking’ against Bournemouth

Liverpool got their Premier League title defence off to a perfect start against Bournemouth on Friday, but it wasn’t without its challenges.

Andoni Iraola’s team faced Arne Slot’s side in the 4-2 win at Anfield on 15 August in the 2025/26 season’s curtain raiser in Merseyside.

Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring for the Reds in the first half, with Cody Gakpo doubling the lead just after the break.

While Antoine Semenyo gave the hosts a scare with his brace, Federico Chiesa restored the Merseyside outfit’s advantage, and Salah equalled Sergio Aguero’s record of goals scored by a player in a single stadium in stoppage time.

Jamie Carragher rips into Ibrahima Konate for poor Liverpool performance against Bournemouth

Ibrahima Konate was “absolutely shocking” for the Reds against Bournemouth, Jamie Carragher says.

The ex-English defender wasn’t pleased to see the Frenchman’s defending as Semenyo equalised for the visitors at Anfield.

Carragher was baffled by the 26-year-old centre-back’s actions as the Ghana international ran at the Merseyside outfit’s backline and beat Alisson in the 76th minute.

Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event on 15 August, the Reds icon said: “What’s he doing? Oh my word. He’s been absolutely shocking this evening, Konate.”

Liverpool have obvious need to sign Marc Guehi

Konate’s contract issues at Anfield may have had a role to play in his abysmal display against Bournemouth.

The 26-year-old’s current deal at the Reds expires next year, and he could potentially already have his head turned by some major European clubs.

It wouldn’t make sense for the Merseyside outfit to keep someone who isn’t committed to the team, and a replacement should be signed in the coming weeks.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has been a target for Liverpool this summer, and Slot must now push Richard Hughes to pay whatever is necessary to seal the deal.

The Reds have bolstered their backline with Giovanni Leoni, but more quality is arguably needed as the Merseyside outfit look to retain the Premier League title at Anfield.

Guehi has consistently shown his qualities in the English top flight and would undoubtedly be a brilliant addition in L4 to compete with Konate for a place in the starting lineup.
