Liverpool told they’re signing ‘strong footballer’ who can become the ‘next Cannavaro’

Liverpool appear to be on the verge of completing yet another impressive transfer deal this summer.

Arne Slot’s all-conquering side from last term have already added six new faces to their squad, with most of them hugely exciting pieces of business.

Liverpool continue to battle for Alexander Isak, as their eye-catching improvements to an already imposing squad look unlikely to grind to a halt in the final few weeks of the window.

The Reds now seemingly have another agreement within their sights, and it looks set to be another acquisition that will attract plenty of headlines.

Liverpool on the verge of signing Giovanni Leoni

Liverpool have been closing in on a deal for Giovanni Leoni in the last few days, a defender who Andrea Pirlo has already earmarked for a big future.

Pirlo managed the 18-year-old during a loan spell with Sampdoria in 2023/24, and branded him as a player who would become “a very strong footballer.”

The centre back has been receiving plenty of interest from both Serie A and the Premier League this summer, but it looks like it will be the Reds who secure his signature.

They are rapidly closing in on a £26million deal for Leoni, and the move will go through, providing there are no hitches, according to The Times.

Leoni is expected to go straight into the first team squad at Anfield, and there are big expectations for a player who Transfermarkt believe could become “the next Fabio Cannavaro.”

Leoni to mark the start of centre-back revamp at Liverpool

Liverpool are also growing ever closer to signing Marc Guehi, as they prepare for a revamp of the centre of their backline over the next few years.

With Ibrahima Konate likely to be heading for the exit within the next 12 months, and Virgil van Dijk beginning to reach the twilight of his career, Slot needs to oversee a steady regeneration at the heart of his defence.

Leoni’s arrival looks set to mark the start of some more youthful arrivals to come in the backline, as the Reds ready themselves for that slow transition.

For all the hype surrounding Leoni, the fact that he currently has some top-quality senior defenders ahead of him will be a huge positive to help ease any pressure and help him settle into his new surroundings.
