Jamie Carragher once made bold Harvey Elliott prediction at Liverpool that has now backfired
Harvey Elliott is the next player on the verge of leaving Liverpool this summer.
Elliott, 21, is closing in on a move to RB Leipzig after he agreed personal terms on a four-year deal with the Bundesliga side.
The midfielder endured a difficult season last time out, only starting two Premier League games since Arne Slot took charge last summer.
Reds legend Jamie Carragher made a prediction for the England Under-21 international years ago, and to say it hasn’t aged well would be an understatement.
Carragher predicted Elliott would be Liverpool’s next Mohamed Salah
Elliott broke into the Liverpool team in the 2021-22 season under Jurgen Klopp, and gained admirers quickly due to his brave playstyle.
After returning from a gruesome injury suffered against Leeds United, the Englishman rturned in January and scored his first competitive Liverpool goal against Cardiff City in the FA Cup, as well as making his Champions League debut.
This stretch of form prompted Carragher to make an outlandish claim that Elliott could become Liverpool‘s next Mohamed Salah, despite the two having varying playstyles.
He told Goal in February 2022: “You have someone really special here, maybe in terms of Mo Salah’s replacement, if that’s the position he plays in.
“Mo Salah is getting to 30 now and we’re all desperate for him to sign a contract, but whenever Mo Salah goes, maybe you’ve got your ready-made replacement.
“Maybe not the same type of player, but a guy that plays on the right and comes in on that left foot.”
Elliott could rip up the Bundesliga like Florian Wirtz
It is safe to say the Salah comparison looks ridiculous in hindsight given the greatness the Egyptian has achieved at Anfield.
However, a player who could be more comparable to the midfielder is Florian Wirtz, the man who looks to have signalled his exit.
Elliott’s best attributes are his passing and dribbling, very similar to those of the German international.
If Elliott can replicate his 2023/24 form at Leipzig should the move go through, then he could replicate the achievements of Wirtz, who tore the Bundesliga to shreds in his time with Leverkusen.
