How much Liverpool could now save as £45m+ Nunez transfer agreed

Darwin Nunez is expected to leave Liverpool in the coming days, three years after his club-record move from Benfica.

The Uruguayan was signed from the Portuguese giants in a deal that, with add-ons included, could have risen to around £85million.

But the 26-year-old has struggled to adapt to the Premier League and was limited to just eight starts last season by Arne Slot.

Liverpool will hope their latest sale can assist in their ongoing efforts to sign Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, with the Magpies demanding over £130m.

Liverpool to save £21.84m from Nunez transfer

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are keen to see a significant amount of money raised through sales this summer, in a bid to offset the Reds’ huge expenditure.

Around £140m has already been raised by the sales of Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Nat Phillips, Caoimhin Kelleher and Tyler Morton, with that number expected to surpass £180m once Nunez’s departure is confirmed.

Liverpool have agreed a deal worth around £46m plus add-ons with Saudi Pro League side, Al-Hilal, according to Fabrizio Romano (6 August).

The striker is yet to agree on personal terms with Simone Inzaghi’s side, but talks are ongoing.

Nunez’s departure will also see Liverpool save a significant amount with the removal of his contract.

According to Capology, the 26-year-old earns £140,000 per week at Anfield, which would amount to £21.84m across the course of the three years remaining on his deal.

Nunez’s sale could assist in defender chase

Much of the focus will be on Liverpool’s chase for Isak. However, the Reds’ need for a defender is far more pressing.

Joe Gomez recently picked up an injury in pre-season. As a result, Slot has just two senior centre-backs to choose from, with one – Ibrahima Konate – regularly suffering from injuries himself.

Liverpool have been linked to Marc Guehi this summer, but progress on that front has ground to a halt, while there has been little mention of further targets.

With the Premier League opener less than two weeks away, the Reds must ensure they do not leave themselves in a compromising position in the early stages of the season.
