How much Guehi could cost Liverpool as Crystal Palace star’s preference emerges

Liverpool may need to spend a little more than anticipated to sign Marc Guehi this summer.

The Reds have not made their desire to sign a centre-back a secret and are expected to accelerate their pursuit over the coming weeks.

Crystal Palace defender Guehi has topped their list for a while. The Englishman currently has one year left on his contract at Selhurst Park and was expected to come at little cost.

However, Liverpool may need to open their chequebooks a little wider to ensure his transfer this summer.

Liverpool could sign Guehi for £50million

As reported by Ed Aarons via X on Tuesday (5 August), Crystal Palace have not received offers for Guehi, who is content to see out his contract at Selhurst Park.

Liverpool are still believed to he his preferred destination with Palace wanting £40million for his signature. Even if the Reds meet the Eagles’ valuation, wages will still need to be factored into the equation.

According to Capology (5 August), Guehi earns £50,000 per week on a contract which runs until 2026. This means that he would make £2.6m between now and the end of next season.

If Liverpool were to sign the defender on a minimum five-year deal and offer him similar wages to Palace, he would pocket £13m. And if that was to be combined with the Eagles’ asking price, then the Reds could be slapped with a £53m bill.

This is not to mention the pay rise that he would likely earn at Anfield. However, even with this adjustment, Guehi would be unlikely to breach the top end of Liverpool’s earners.

Guehi to Liverpool makes sense

Even if the financial benefits are disregarded, the sporting reasons make Guehi’s potential transfer a sensible one.

Not only is he Premier League-proven, but he has played at the highest level for both club and country. Age is also a huge factor to consider. At 25, he is coming into his prime years, which would be best spent at Anfield.

With Ibrahima Konate linked with a departure and a thinning of options at the back, Guehi to Liverpool just makes sense.
