Ekitike next? Liverpool players who scored on their debuts in Community Shield

Liverpool have signed striker Hugo Ekitike for a huge fee, and he is readying himself for a competitive debut.

Ekitike is one of several high-profile summer signings, and he could potentially be joined upfront by Alexander Isak.

The Frenchman will hope to make a positive early impact at Liverpool before Isak potentially joins to usurp him in the pecking order, and a fast start would be of benefit.

Liverpool will soon face Crystal Palace in the Community Shield, and Ekitike could follow two others in scoring on their debuts for the club in the traditional curtain raiser.

Joel Matip, Man City, 4 August 2019

Joel Matip joined Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer of 2019, and his debut came in the Community Shield against champions Manchester City.

Raheem Sterling gave Man City the lead at Wembley, but Matip equalised with 13 minutes to go, bundling a header home after a chipped pass from Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool went on to lose on penalties, but they had the last laugh as they strolled to the Premier League title that season.

Matip would also go on to become a Liverpool icon, winning almost everything on offer as an outstanding partner for Van Dijk before retiring in 2024.

Darwin Nunez, Man City, 30 July 2022

Liverpool faced Man City in the Community Shield again in 2022, but this time they came out victorious, with their new striker on the scoresheet.

Darwin Nunez had joined from Benfica for a club record fee, and his impact was instant as he earned the penalty which made it 2-1 to Liverpool, before netting himself in injury time for his first goal.

The game was notable for Man City summer signing Erling Haaland missing a glorious opportunity, but with the trajectory both forwards have gone on since, the Norwegian has had the last laugh.

It has not quite worked out for Nunez, as despite scoring some big goals, his poor conversion rate will likely lead to his exit this summer.
