Community Shield: How do Liverpool usually fare in season opener?

Liverpool travel to Wembley to take on Crystal Palace in the Community Shield this Sunday.

This match, between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners, has been the curtain-raiser to the season for the English football season for hundreds of years.

The Reds have won it 16 times in their history, and have competed in the match seven times in the Premier League era.

1992: Leeds 4 Liverpool 3

Eric Cantona stole the show with a hat-trick for league champions Leeds United.

The Frenchman took matters into his own hands with three goals, while Tony Dorigo also scored for Leeds.

Ian Rush and Dean Saunders had equalised twice but Leeds then rushed into a 4-2 lead. A late own goal by Gordan Strachan turned out to be nothing more than a consolation. Leeds haven’t appeared in the Community Shield since this victory.

2001: Manchester United 1 Liverpool 2

Liverpool had already lifted the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup in 2001.

They lifted more silverware here thanks to a Gary McAllister penalty and a Michael Owen strike.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy scored for Manchester United, but the Red Devils couldn’t stop Liverpool adding to their trophy haul.

2002: Arsenal 1 Liverpool 0

Liverpool qualified for this match as Premier League runners-up, as Arsenal won the double in the 2001/02 season.

Gilberto Silva scored the winner in a mostly forgettable game.

2006: Chelsea 1 Liverpool 2

Liverpool qualified for this match after their victory against West Ham United in the FA Cup final.

They beat league champions Chelsea thanks to a trademark long-range strike by John Arne Riise and a late header from Peter Crouch.

Andrei Shevchenko had equalised for Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

2019: Manchester City 1 Liverpool 1 (Manchester City won 5-4 on penalties)

This match ended up all square after goals from Raheem Sterling and Joel Matip.

Liverpool midfielder Gigi Wijnaldum missed his penalty, while Manchester City scored all five of theirs.

The Reds would get over this defeat by winning the Premier League, finishing 18 points ahead of Manchester City in second.

2020: Liverpool 1 Arsenal 1 (Arsenal won 5-4 on penalties)

Liverpool lost on penalties for the second year in a row after Rhian Brewster missed his spot-kick.

Takumi Minamino had equalised for the Reds after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s opener.

2022: Manchester City 1 Liverpool 3

Liverpool lifted the shield after goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez. Julian Alvarez scored for Manchester City.

This was the only time Jurgen Klopp won the competition.

Arne Slot will lead his side out at Wembley for the first in the Community Shield match this Sunday.

Although this match is often described as a ‘glorified friendly’, Slot will still be keen to win the match.
