Liverpool time Wright deal to perfection after what Gary Neville said in new Salford interview

Liverpool are set to complete the signing of Salford City teenager Will Wright.

The striker had looked to be joining Arsenal but could not agree on personal terms, allowing Liverpool to swoop in and sign the youngster.

Wright scored over 40 goals at youth level last season and made four appearances for Salford’s first team.

He is expected to join up with Liverpool’s Under-21s upon the completion of the formalities of the deal.

Liverpool get one over on Neville

Salford were taken over by several Manchester United players, including Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, in 2014, with Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim owning the rest.

At the time, the Ammies were in the eighth tier of the English Football League, but have risen dramatically in the years since.

They now sit in League Two, and announced in May that David Beckham and Neville had completed a takeover of the club once again, as part of a new consortium with Lord Mervyn Davies and Declan Kelly.

In the first episode of a new series called This is Salford (28 July), Neville addressed Salford’s fans to explain the new owners’ ambitions, describing a drive towards “sustainability”.

The former full-back’s words ended the video. He said, “This project is now what? 12-13 years old? And I can’t wait for the next five years now, but there’s a lot to do.”

But Neville’s words have already aged poorly, much to the delight of Liverpool fans.

With the confirmation of Wright’s departure to the Reds, Salford have already lost a figure who undoubtedly would have been key to their next five years on the pitch.

And Liverpool fans will take much pleasure in knowing that it is their club’s actions that have stained those words.

Wright is an exciting signing

Liverpool will be very pleased to have completed the hijack of Arsenal’s deal for Wright.

The 17-year-old is, by all accounts, a goal machine and should add an immediate injection of quality to the U21s, whilst bearing huge promise for the future.

And the additional factors of negatively impacting both Neville and Arsenal only work to sweeten the deal.
