‘Liverpool to accept Luis Diaz bid’ after Nunez transfer breaks down

Liverpool may be about to alter their stance on Luis Diaz following their failure to get Darwin Nunez out of the door.

The Reds have been struggling to sell the Uruguayan as they aim to try and offset some of their spending from what has already become an eye-wateringly expensive transfer window.

Hugo Ekitike looks set to potentially become the latest man to head to Anfield in a big-money move, with the Merseysiders having already splashed out on the likes of Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.

Diaz is another player whose future has been up in the air, but the winger’s situation could be about to become a little clearer.

Liverpool may look to keep Nunez and sell Diaz

Diaz’s future has been cause for plenty of speculation at Liverpool, with his current contract having just two seasons left to run.

Bayern Munich have already seen a bid of £58million for the forward knocked back, but the Reds must be extremely careful to ensure they don’t end up in the same situation as they did with Trent Alexander-Arnold.

With that in mind, the recent collapse of Nunez’s move to Napoli may be enough to alter the L3 outfit’s stance on the Colombian and convince them to take the cash while they have the chance.

If Bayern were to come back in with an improved bid for the 28-year-old, it could be a sensible option for the champions to recoup some money on Diaz, and accept the fact that they may have to keep Nunez instead.

That may not be the idea that Arne Slot had in mind at the start of the summer, but it would at least ensure Liverpool can bring some money back into their coffers, while also allowing them to retain a player who can provide genuine quality at the top of the pitch.

Liverpool can’t lose Diaz for free

Liverpool could also risk losing Ibrahima Konate at the end of his contract, and while the situation facing them on Diaz isn’t quite as grave at the moment, they certainly won’t want to see him depart for free as well.

Alexander-Arnold’s exit was a major blow, and also a timely reminder of how important it can be to keep on top of players’ contractual situations and wage demands during the season.

The Reds could be about to get stung again with Konate, and they simply cannot afford to continue losing quality players without any incentive coming back the other way.

Diaz had a hugely impressive campaign last time out, and he would undoubtedly be a significant loss, but it may be that Liverpool have to accept defeat on this occasion and take the money while it is available to them.

With Nunez now seeming like he might be set to stay at Anfield, it may make sense for Diaz to become the sacrifice instead.
