Liverpool fans all say the same about Grace Fisk after England Women win

Liverpool star Grace Fisk has been the talking point despite not being in the England squad.

The 27-year-old made 17 appearances in the Women’s Super League and was a standout performer despite the Reds finishing seventh.

She is one of the best defenders in the division, brilliant on the ball and can play across the backline, so it was a surprise that she was not included by Sarina Wiegman.

England endure early horror show in Sweden win

England were 2-0 down at half-time in their Women’s European Championships quarter-final against Sweden.

Goals from Kosovare Asllani and Stina Blackstenius put Wiegman’s Lionesses in a vulnerable position as they try to defend their title.

Centre-backs Leah Williamson and Jess Carter were particularly poor in the opening 45 minutes of the contest as Peter Gerhardsson’s side took control.

That makes Fisk’s exclusion look ever worse, as the Reds’ ace shone in the league last season, and should have been taken.

However, they would ultimately pull it back as Lucy Bronze notched a goal for the Three Lions, and Michelle Agyemang scored the leveller in the 80th minute, taking it to extra time.

There was a nervy moment in the 87th minute between Williamson and Bronze that forced Hannah Hampton into a save, but they held on to force an additional 30 minutes.

Ultimately, they would win in a penalty shootout despite missing three in a row to go through to face Italy in the semi-finals.

Fisk should have been in the England squad

Fisk is yet to receive her first call-up for the national team, and many Liverpool supporters were shocked when she was not included this time around.

Obviously, considering the Reds’ poor season, it is perhaps not a surprise that Wiegman has not called up any of their players, but Fisk deserved to be included.

That was only made clearer by what was on show tonight, and Liverpool fans agreed.

Perhaps, the shambolic performance of her defenders against the Swedes will make the Norwegian reconsider her stance on the 27-year-old and finally give her a chance.

If she is to do that, though, she needs the Totally Wicked Stadium outfit to improve their standing in the game; the two-time WSL champions are currently in a rough patch, without a manager since Matt Beard left in February.

They have lost two of their best players, both Taylor Hinds on a free and Olivia Smith for a £1million world record fee, both to Champions League winners Arsenal.

Fenway Sports Group need to reinvest that and make a serious attempt to compete at the top, maybe then, Fisk will get her opportunity.

They have started that process, securing the signature of Rangers star Kirsty Maclean, who was regarded as one of the best Scottish talents in their domestic game.

Otherwise, she will continue to be overlooked despite deserving a chance to show what she can do on the international stage.
