Every Liverpool star who wore No 20 shirt as number retired in tribute to Diogo Jota

Liverpool have retired the number 20 shirt following the passing of Diogo Jota.

Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, died in a road traffic accident in Spain on July 3, with the club later announcing the retirement of the forward’s shirt number.

Here, Liverpool News looks at every player to have worn the number.

Diogo Jota Liverpool

Diogo Jota, 2020-2025

In the weeks before Jota’s tragic passing, the forward had celebrated his first Premier League title with Liverpool.

Joining from Wolves in 2020, the versatile attacker went on to make 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists.

He will be remembered as the man Liverpool always looked to when they needed a goal.

Adam Lallana, 2014-2020

Adam Lallana won both the Premier League and the Champions League in his time at Liverpool, but the midfielder is probably better remembered for a goal at Carrow Road.

A back-and-forth affair had seen Norwich level the scores in the 92nd minute, before Lallana rode onto a bouncing ball to fire into the ground and into the net.

The ensuing scramble saw the Englishman leap into new manager Jurgen Klopp’s arms, the German eventually losing his glasses in the pile of celebrating players.

Aly Cissokho, 2013-14

Aly Cissokho is among Liverpool’s less memorable number 20s.

The left-back signed on loan from Valencia for the 2013/14 season, making 15 appearances in the Premier League.

Cissokho would later go on to play for Aston Villa and at 37, is still playing professionally in Thailand.

Jay Spearing, 2011-13

Jay Spearing has spent the majority of his career on the books at Liverpool.

Born and raised on Merseyside, the midfielder began his career in the Reds’ youth system, spending 16 years at the club before his departure in 2013.

And in 2022, Spearing returned to his home, becoming a coach within the youth system while also appearing for the Liverpool Under-21s.

Javier Mascherano, 2007-11

Javier Mascherano joined Liverpool in 2007 on loan from West Ham, with the London club involved in a messy situation that had seen both the defender and Carlos Tevez join in a deal that would later see the Hammers fined by the Premier League.

The Argentine’s move became permanent in 2008, and the defender quickly became a fan favourite at Anfield.

But in 2010, Mascherano would ask to leave to join Barcelona. The 41-year-old is now the head coach of Inter Miami, where he manages footballing legend Lionel Messi.

Scott Carson, 2005-06

Joining from Leeds United in 2005, Scott Carson made five appearances for Liverpool in his first six months at the club, including the home leg of the Reds’ Champions League quarter-final against Juventus.

The goalkeeper would make four more appearances for Liverpool before eventually moving to West Brom.

Carson has spent the past four years at Manchester City, but left the club at the end of last season.

Anthony Le Tallec, 2003-04

A promising teenager at the time, Anthony Le Tallec was signed from French club Le Havre in 2001.

The Frenchman would go on to make 32 appearances for Liverpool, his only goal coming against Slovenian team NK Olimpija in the UEFA cup.

His cousin, Florent Sinama Pongolle, also played for Liverpool, making 65 appearances.

Nick Barnby, 2000-02

Nick Barnby remains one of the few players bought from Everton by Liverpool.

The midfielder scored against his former side in 2000, but left the club in 2002, joining Leeds United.

Barnby would go on to enjoy an extensive Premier League career, making 343 appearances in England’s top division and scoring 54 goals.

Stig Inge Bjornebye, 1992-2000

Stig Inge Bjornbye was bought by Liverpool from Rosenborg in 1992.

The Norwegian’s early years in England were tainted by struggles and injuries, but after finding his feet, Bjornebye excelled in the 1996/97 season.

He would eventually leave to join Blackburn, before retiring in 2003. He now serves as the sporting director of Danish side AGF Aarhus.
