Liverpool ‘sign best talent in Scotland’ as new Rangers transfer confirmed

Liverpool are set for a busy summer, for both their men’s and women’s teams.

Fenway Sports Group have already invested heavily in the male side with the signings of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, setting them back nearly £170million.

While Arne Slot’s side won the Premier League title, their female counterparts did not enjoy a similar kind of success.

That is set to lead to big changes ahead of the WSL returning, with Rangers feeling the full force.

Liverpool sign Rangers star Maclean

Liverpool Women finished in seventh place in the Women’s Super League and are trying to remedy that disastrous campaign.

They have secured their first addition of the summer with Rangers star Kirsty Maclean, in a deal that has been seen as a real coup in Scotland.

The Scotsman journalist Graham Falk, who was the first to break the news of the Reds’ interest, believes that it is a brilliant signing.

He said: “Kirsty Maclean has completed her move to Liverpool from Rangers. Excellent signing. The best young talent in Scotland.”

FSG starting to right their wrongs

John Henry and Co. have not gotten much wrong in their time at Anfield; however, their neglect of the Women’s team is glaring at the moment.

The Reds have been rocked by vice-captain Taylor Hinds’ departure to Champions League winners Arsenal on a free transfer.

Things looked even bleaker when a £1million bid for Olivia Smith from the Gunners, a record fee for the women’s game, was accepted.

It all felt a bit directionless, losing two of your best players, while also being without a manager, despite Matt Beard departing in February and having plenty of time to find a replacement.

They have held talks with former Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor, but nothing has materialised on that right now.

However, it appears that the American owners are trying to build something up again, and their first addition is promising.

Maclean had over 100 appearances for the Gers and was part of their team that won the Scottish Women’s Premier League title in 2022, as well as domestic cup doubles in the past two seasons and has 10 caps for Scotland.

It will be a while before supporters begin to trust FSG again after the recent setbacks, but the latest move is a good start to get back on the road to Women’s Super League glory.
