Konaté contract update as Liverpool look to avoid Alexander-Arnold repeat

Liverpool have a developing situation over the future of Ibrahima Konate, with contract negotiations not progressing as expected.

Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah committed their futures to the Reds earlier this year, but Trent Alexander-Arnold ran down his contract before joining Real Madrid.

Liverpool replaced Alexander-Arnold with Jeremie Frimpong, but they will hope that they do not lose another key player for free.

Konate’s contract expires next season, and with Real Madrid interested in the Frenchman, there is now an uncomfortable situation unfolding.

Konate rejects Liverpool contract offers

With Arne Slot keen on keeping Konate at Anfield, Liverpool have offered him a new contract, but he has now rejected their approaches twice.

Spanish outlet MARCA (July 8) have now reported that Konate has rejected two offers from Liverpool and could even end up leaving this summer as a result.

It is claimed that Liverpool want to avoid a repeat of the Alexander-Arnold situation, and would rather sell Konate this summer than lose him for free next year.

Konate is leaning towards a move to Real Madrid, and this transfer could be brought forward to this summer if he does not agree to fresh terms at Liverpool.

Liverpool need to resolve Konate situation quickly

Liverpool will be frustrated that Konate has rejected their offers so far, but nothing is ruled out either way and there is still the possibility that he signs a new deal to remain at the club.

However, they need to press for an answer soon. If he continues to refuse to extend, then Liverpool should try to sell and replace him as soon as possible.

Marc Guehi has been linked, and he could prove to be a strong replacement after impressing in the Premier League with Crystal Palace over the last few years.

Letting Konate enter the final year of his contract with no extension in sight is a risk, and losing an asset worth potentially over £50 million for free would be a poor move financially.

Fans were furious at Alexander-Arnold’s exit, and they will not be happy if Konate departs in the same way next year at the expense of the club.
