Liverpool reveal: ‘True reason’ Martin Zubimendi turned down Anfield transfer
Arsenal have announced the signing of former Liverpool target Martin Zubimendi.
The Spaniard has joined the Gunners from Real Sociedad on a five-year contract, in a deal worth around £55million.
Zubimendi had looked set to join Liverpool last summer, but ultimately decided to stay in Spain.

Arsenal gave Zubimendi second thoughts
Zubimendi had seemed to have accepted Liverpool’s interest, with the clubs in negotiations over a final fee.
His sudden U-turn came as a shock to fans, with reports at the time claiming that Sociedad’s attempts to persuade the midfielder to stay had proved successful.
Ultimately, Arne Slot’s squad did not suffer without Zubimendi, with Ryan Gravenberch’s consistency in midfield leading Liverpool to the Premier League title.
But following Zubimendi’s move to Arsenal, the true reason for the 26-year-old’s change in heart has emerged.
According to Telegraph Sport (July 6), while the midfielder was considering a move to Liverpool, he received an alternative opportunity that would see him spend another year in Spain and join rivals Arsenal in the following summer.
The North London club’s intentions were made clear during their negotiations for Zubimendi’s former teammate, Mikel Merino.
The moves made sense for all parties. For Arsenal, they would gain two Spain internationals – one year apart.
For Sociedad, who would not lose both in the same summer, and for Zubimendi, who was willing to spend another year at the club in which he grew up.
The midfielder also had some reservations over moving to Liverpool during a transition period following the departure of Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool will not rue Zubimendi loss
Liverpool hopes may have taken a dent following the news of Zubimendi’s decision last summer, but the Reds did not take long to get over it.
Gravenberch quickly established himself in the base of midfield, and the Dutchman’s performances over the season erased any Liverpool disappointments.
Ultimately, the signing of Zubimendi may well have blocked the path of the 23-year-old.
That being said, this summer should see the Reds provide Gravenberch with further competition in midfield.
Wataru Endo, whilst a competent back-up, could not challenge the midfielder for his position last season.
Gravenberch has proven both his reliability and his talent, but Liverpool should take care to ensure those qualities are not taken for granted.
