Carragher and Collymore pay tributes to Diogo Jota as Liverpool star dies in car crash

Liverpool and Portugal footballer Diogo Jota has died in a car crash aged 28.

The Portuguese FA confirmed that Jota’s brother, Andre Silva, was also killed in the crash, which police have confirmed took place in northwestern Spain in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Liverpool Football Club have since shared their devastation at the tragic passing of Jota, who won the Premier League as part of Arne Slot’s team last season.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, quickly winning the hearts of Liverpool fans with his brilliant finishing and rapid pace.

He won the FA Cup and League Cup with the Reds in 2022, eventually ending his and Liverpool’s wait for the Premier League title last season.

Jota was also a regular for Portugal, winning the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and appearing in the final against Spain as Os Navegadores won it again in 2025.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher took to Instagram to share his shock at the tragic news, posting: “Absolutely devastated by the sad news about Diogo Jota.

“Thoughts are with his wife Rute and their three kids.”

Jota had shared images to social media of his wedding day just two weeks ago.

Stan Collymore, who played for Liverpool between the years 1995-1997, shared similar sentiments on X.

“I’m sure like many in the football family there’s just a profound sense of shock, sadness and disbelief at the news of Diogo Jota’s death at the unfathomably young age of 28.

“Newly married too. Sending my deepest condolences to his family and friends and everyone at Liverpool Football Club.

“Devastated.”
