Liverpool warned they risk Cole Palmer transfer error as deal expected

Liverpool could be set to make a major error in the transfer market despite having an outstanding window so far.

Florian Wirtz has joined for a club record fee, and Liverpool have also strengthened their squad with Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.

More additions could follow, while Liverpool have also done well with sales, as Jarell Quansah could lead an exodus this summer.

Arne Slot won the Premier League with ease in his first season, ending four years of dominance from Manchester City, but they could now be about to repeat an error the Citizens once made.

Harvey Elliott expected to leave Liverpool

Harvey Elliott is one of the best young talents at the club, but fell down the pecking order last season and could now leave.

Elliott performed superbly as England won the Under-21 Euros this summer, and Liverpool could now sell him for £40million, which could fund even more ambitious business this summer.

However, speaking on The Rest Is Football Podcast (July 1), former Man City defender Micah Richards claimed that selling Elliott would be a mistake.

“If I’m Liverpool, I’m not selling him. Not one bit. I’m not selling him,” he stated.

“You know, it reminds me of the Cole Palmer situation when he was at Manchester City. And okay, you got Phil Foden, you got Kevin De Bruyne at the time, you got other young players coming through.

“And I just think if you could get a good Premier League team on loan for the season, because we keep talking about Salah, Salah signed a two-year deal, hasn’t he?

“And I mean, a year from now, it could be, I don’t want to say winding down, but might not be the same player that we used to over the years. And he could play that position so well. I would just wait.”

Elliott could be Liverpool’s Cole Palmer

Elliott hardly featured from the start last season, but his talent is obvious, and he did have a big impact at times, which included scoring the winner away at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

There are parallels to be drawn between Elliott and Cole Palmer, who impressed in flashes at City before he was sold to Chelsea, and quickly became one of the best players in the Premier League.

While selling Elliott makes sense given his lack of potential game time next season, Liverpool must ensure that they insert a buyback clause in his contract, as they did with Bayer Leverkusen-bound Quansah.

Man City have been left to rue their Palmer mistake, and Liverpool must now take their regret as a lesson when it comes to a talent like Elliott, and accepting a lower transfer fee to include a buyback would be a worthwhile move.
