Exclusive: UEFA to investigate Elliott as incident emerges in England U21s win

Liverpool star Harvey Elliott played a major role as England retained their European Under-21 Championship crown with victory over Germany.

Elliott scored five goals in six matches for England, including one in Saturday’s (28 June) dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory in the final.

There has inevitably been transfer speculation over Elliott’s future at Anfield, with many believing he should be at a club where he is playing regularly.

While the 22-year-old is thriving for his national team, he may be in a bit of trouble after what he was spotted doing following the match in Slovakia.

Elliott in X-rated gesture after England win v Germany

As England’s youngsters celebrated their victory, the TV cameras panned to Elliott as he cupped his ears and stuck up two fingers.

It was not clear who Elliott was aiming the gesture towards, but it was seemingly towards a Germany player.

That footage has since gone viral, and former FIFA referee Keith Hackett believes UEFA will now investigate the incident.

Hackett exclusively told Liverpool News: “The action by Harvey Elliott was clearly shown on television close up and does not leave anyone in doubt.

Players need to be aware of their responsibility regarding behaviour, and even when they are overjoyed keep some self control.

“UEFA will investigate and either a warning letter or fine is likely to be imposed.”

Liverpool have a big call to make when it comes to Elliott’s future. Arne Slot will no doubt see him as an important squad option, but he has to start more regularly – that much is clear.

The question is whether this is the right time to cash in, when Elliott’s stock is arguably higher than it will ever be.

Liverpool could land some welcome funds by cashing in, which could then be injected into other areas.

If Elliott does move on this summer, he will do so with the best wishes of every Liverpool supporter.
