Fabrizio Romano reveals hidden clause that could see Jarell Quansah re-join Liverpool

Jarell Quansah’s departure from Liverpool will be confirmed in the coming days after a deal was agreed with Bayer Leverkusen last week.

The Englishman will join the Bundesliga giants for a fee in the region of £30 million, with another future £5m potentially arriving in add-ons.

The sale of Quansah marks the third piece of business concluded by Liverpool and Leverkusen this summer, after the Reds signed Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz.

Fabrizio Romano confirms Quansah deal details

Quansah made just 13 Premier League appearances last season for Liverpool, stepping in on occasion for the largely ever-present Ibrahima Konate.

The 22-year-old may have relished a run of matches when Konate suffered a knee injury in December, but Arne Slot opted for the more experienced Joe Gomez.

With that, Quansah appears to have decided that he must leave Liverpool for the benefit of his development – with Leverkusen presenting a chance to feature more prominently.

The defender’s doorway to a important spot in Liverpool’s starting XI is not closed, however, with Fabrizio Romano today revealing the terms of a buy-back clause inserted into the deal.

A future fee of £60m, potentially rising to £70m with add-ons, would see Quansah return to Anfield if the club wish to regain him.

The year in which the clause would become active is not yet clear, but Liverpool’s eagerness to include the option does make clear their belief in the centre-back’s potential.

Quansah will undergo a medical on Monday, according to Romano, with an announcement expected to follow.

Liverpool must replace Quansah

Quansah struggled for minutes last season, but Liverpool will not take the importance of replacing him for granted.

While Gomez was picked in the absence of Konate, his availability was a rarity throughout the season.

The defender was ruled out for the second half of the season after injuring his hamstring – a continuation of the extensive issues he has struggled with in recent years.

And Konate himself, is no stranger to periods on the injury table. The Frenchman has been ruled out with several issues in his time since joining the club, and his availability cannot be depended on.

Liverpool must ensure their replacement for Quansah is ready to step in, and has a history of reliable availability – links to Marc Guehi suggest they may have found their desired man.
