Luis Diaz and Liverpool saga turns messy as ‘betrayal’ claim made
Luiz Diaz could be set to leave Liverpool this summer with contract talks appearing to have hit an impasse.
The Colombian’s deal at Anfield is due to expire in 2027, but discussions over fresh terms had, initially, looked to be progressing positively.
And Liverpool had looked keen to retain Diaz this summer, after fending off interest from Barcelona earlier in the window.

Diaz contract talks break down
Diaz enjoyed a key role for Liverpool last season, firing in 13 goals and providing seven assists in the Premier League as Arne Slot’s team ran away with the title.
The winger had faced questions over his ability after a disappointing 2023/24 season, but looked to have discovered a new lease of life under the Dutch coach.
However, a new report has suggested that assurances over Diaz’s position in the squad appear to have been thrown into disarray.
According to Pipe Sierra (26 June) Liverpool’s interest in renewing the Colombian’s contract seems to have disappeared and the player could even depart this summer.
Diaz and his entourage are said to be unhappy with Liverpool, who they feel have gone back on their word in an act of betrayal.
The likelihood of the winger’s departure from Anfield in the coming months is unclear, but the news may suggest that Liverpool’s stance on incoming interest has softened.

Diaz can be replaced
Diaz was a constant threat for Liverpool last season. With devastating pace, the winger often made himself an option with deep, incisive runs in behind.
However, his decision-making could sometimes leave much to be desired, and fans were often left frustrated by his wastefulness.
His departure from Liverpool this summer would be treated as a blow, but the club have already shown a willingness to enter the market and upgrade.
Rodrygo, for example, could be an ideal replacement. The Brazilian’s future at Real Madrid is uncertain, with his ideal position – on the left of the attack – blocked by the presence of Vinicius Jr.
If the winger became available in the latter months of the window, Liverpool would surely be foolish not to throw their hat in the ring for his signature.
The presence of Cody Gakpo should not be understated, either.
The Dutchman has often been forced to take a backseat behind Diaz but has shown an impressive ability to assert himself, when given the chance.
Should Diaz leave, Gakpo could find himself among Liverpool’s first choice line-up, allowing him to showcase his ability in a more consistent role.
