Tom Werner ripped to shreds after what he’s said about Liverpool fanbase

Tom Werner’s reign as Liverpool chairman has certainly not been boring.

The American businessman took over the position in 2010 and has overseen many ups and downs at Anfield.

While last season’s Premier League success may have sweetened his time at the Merseyside club, Werner has still made multiple poor decisions in the past.

With Arne Slot now attempting to build upon Liverpool’s recent achievements, the chairman has raised eyebrows with his latest comments.

Stefan Borson calls out Werner’s ‘one billion Liverpool fans’ claim

There is no doubt that Liverpool’s fanbase is one of the best in the world.

Anfield is famous for its European nights, with many stars being overwhelmed by the atmosphere that is produced.

As a result, the stadium has seen various upgrades over the years to help accommodate more fans.

While supporters can sometimes be at the centre of controversy, such as when Liverpool fans booed Trent Alexander-Arnold, there is no doubt about their passion for their team.

Liverpool fans have always turned up in great numbers

However, Werner may have overestimated how many Liverpool fans there are.

In an interview with The Times (27 June), the chairman said: “We think there could now be as many as a billion people around the world who follow Liverpool. There is a special connection with the fans.”

However, finance expert Stefan Borson was quick to call out this claim on X (27 June) with a sarcastic reply to the article.

He posted: “So that’s 2 billion of the 7.5 billion male and females in the World over 5 years old who are Liverpool or Manchester United fans. Sounds likely.”

Werner tries too hard to big up Liverpool fanbase

There is nothing wrong with Werner bigging up the Liverpool fanbase, but he is clearly well wide of the mark with these comments and leave him open to ridicule.

Reds fans will all agree they support the best team in the world, but even they will accept one billion is way off the scale.
