‘Andy Robertson legacy set at Liverpool’ as Atletico Madrid close in on transfer

Andy Robertson could now stay at Liverpool and build his Anfield legacy further.

With Milos Kerkez being officially announced as a Liverpool player, it is unlikely that Robertson will go into next season as Arne Slot’s first-choice left-back.

The Scottish international may be past his best now, but he has been a phenomenal servant for the Reds throughout the years.

His attacking output with Trent Alexander-Arnold made them one of the greatest full-back partnerships in Premier League history, with the possibility of a reunion in Madrid emerging.

Robertson to Atletico seems unlikely after latest transfer update

With Trent already moving to Real Madrid, Robertson looked to be following him to the Spanish capital, where he would join Atletico.

Despite the 31-year-old making 33 appearances last campaign as Liverpool won their second Premier League title, Slot felt the left-back position needed to be addressed over the summer.

There will be fierce competition among the left-backs for a starting role next season.

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano (26 June), Atletico have seemingly turned their attention elsewhere, with the Spanish club closing in on a deal for Atalanta left wing back Matteo Ruggeri.

This seemingly means Robertson will remain at Anfield for the upcoming season if no new offers come in for him.

However, Robertson’s long-term future in Merseyside remains uncertain, with the full-back entering the last year of his contract at the club.

Liverpool should sell Tsimikas and keep Robertson

Kostas Tsimikas has also been linked with a move away from Liverpool in the summer.

Tsimikas or Robertson won’t want to go into next season as the third choice at Anfield, leaving Slot with a potential dilemma.

Selling Tsimikas seems to make the most sense, as he has proven not to be at the level required to start for Liverpool regularly.

Despite Robertson’s best days being in the rear view mirror, keeping him in the dressing room as a leader will be very useful to Slot’s side as they prepare to participate in another title race next season.

The Scotsman would be the perfect cover for Kerkez and could even help the youngster settle and find his feet at Anfield.

If, for whatever reason, Kerkez has a dip in form, then Slot would be able to bring in a player who has been there and done it at the highest level to steady the nerves in the meantime.
